Textual analysis
The denotation of the magazine shows a black woman posing with one hand on her head and the other on her neck. The woman seems to be smiling and wearing a brightly colored red, black and yellow stripy dress with a yellow scarf around her neck. The girl seems to look young as if she is a college student herself with clear glowing skin. Also on the poster I can see the masthead “JAYE” which is in a big bold font with yellowy orange color. All the letters seem to be capital letters and have a serif type of style. On top of the masthead is the selling line in a small white font, while opposite the selling line is the dateline. The cover lines seem to be in the same font and colors of the selling line and the masthead, with three cover lines on the left side and four cover lines on the right side.
The lighting on the cover of the magazine is high key lighting which gives the cover a commercial look, the high key lighting relates to many fashion magazines therefore the lighting is appropriate in terms of relating to the purpose. The high key lighting allows us to see the girls face and clothes clearly as she is advertising the clothes. The purpose of using the high key lighting makes the audience automatically notice an object or a person; in this case we automatically pay attention to the girl on the cover.

The setting in the background is not clear people the magazine uses a narrow depth of field which means the focus is in he girl and the background is blurred out. However from the image I assume that the background is in a school college corridor, which would relate to the target audience who are college students.

The costume that the girl is wearing is juxtaposition because it is the opposite of what college students would wear (its too formal), which doesn’t relate to the setting. However, the magazine is a fashion magazine which means that they would be advertising clothes. Therefore the image is appropriate, which creates a direct focus on the girl because she stands out. Also the fact that she is wearing bright colours relates to her mood; in which the poster shows she looks happy, this creates a warm atmosphere.

The prop in the magazine is not clear however i would assume that the scarf is the prop because it doesn’t go with the costume.  The prop is meant to represent being comfortable within in the colour scheme of yellow. The fact that she is wearing a scarf inside gives the sense that magazine represents felling confident with your self no matter the occasion. The prop also show that it it is a fashion magazine because it looks like she is almost advertising it.

The non verbal communication of the girl on the poster shows that the girl looks happy, she seems to be looking straight into the camera, therefore knowing she is being photographed. Also her body position suggest that she is posing because the way her hands are positioned looks very commercial, theses poses are usually on fashion magazines, so it would suddenly inform  the audience of the type of magazine it is.

The magazine is an asymmetrical composition with the unequal number of cover lines on each side of the cover, this give a sense of imbalance; which could relate to a college students life. A college student life is usually unorganised and chaotic because they have so much going on so the poster relates to their life style.  However the colours in the magazines are all quiet similar which relates to being organised. The colours that the magazine has used are all quiet warm colours like yellow which represent maturity, sophistication and comfort. The magazine is about teaching college to fell grown up so the colours represent that.

The masthead uses a serif font which relates to sophistication, the font is large and bold to catch the attention of the audience. It is important that the font is large because the masthead is the same colour of the cover lines therefore the large font allows it to be more recognisable. The fact that it is all in capital letters represent that fact that the magazine is about growing up, if it was in small case letters it would communicate less about growing up and look childish.

The main cover line is also in a large font which would grab peoples attention, the cover line relates to it target audience who are mainly woman by using the stereotype of women being materialistic, nevertheless this is acceptable because the magazine is based on fashion. Also the cover lines are different from the masthead because they use san serif fonts instead which make the magazine more youthful. It also relates to a modern society of gives that not only go to college to learn but to show of their clothes. The san serif font also gives the message that you should enjoy your self and relax, (with the calm warm colours).

Overall the magazine gives the impression that it’s a fashion magazine teaching college students to grow up but to also to enjoy themselves. We get this from the warm colours that they use and the type of fonts that they use. We also understand that the magazine is for women college student by the cover lines and the main image on the cover. The fact that there is no barcode suggests that the magazine isn’t sold in the shops but may be given out. Also the date shows that they have monthly editions which may be given out in the college. Also the selling line suggest that it is a different college magazine that is going to inform you about things that college students enjoy "Because college is more than the classroom".
